The first cry

City of Poznań, 2006

In June 1956, the first general strike took place in Poznań, opposing the communist regime. The strike became a symbol of disagreement over injustice and difficult living conditions.

How to show the series of events that took place during the strike without falling into pathos and historical pedagogy? How to celebrate the 50th anniversary in one picture?

We decided to show the “first cry”, symbolised by a crying newborn wearing an armband with the colours of the Polish flag. The idea was emotively appreciated by the living participants of the important strike, while others were reminded about it with a nationwide outdoor campaign. The campaign received the Golden Format Award 2007 at the Festival of Polish City Promotion.
